Ty\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The garden is for me an exercise in memory . . .&nbsp;<br>\u2014 Jamaica Kincaid, <em>My Garden<\/em> <em>(Book)<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">One cannot rule out the possibility of a connection between . . . two events, or the existence of a hidden link, as one sometimes finds with plants, for instance, like when a clutch of grass is pulled out by the roots, and you think you\u2019ve got rid of it entirely, only for grass of the exact same species to grow back in the same spot a quarter of a century later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u2014 Adania Shibli, <em>Minor Detail<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gardening has been called the slowest of the performing arts. It\u2019s true\u2014plants most often transform and extend their reach at a pace that eludes immediate perception. Time-lapse photography can speed up their long choreographies so that the eye can catch a glimpse of them. But anyone who has ever put a seed in the dirt and waited for something to happen\u2014wondering if it will, then waiting and waiting some more, within a bouquet of question marks\u2014has some intimacy with that gap between the cadence of their acts and the temporalities of the land\u2019s expression.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vegetable time of the garden is not only unhurried in relation to the tempos of human perception, it is also intergenerational\u2014sometimes ancestral. When the Caribbean philosopher Sylvia Wynter wrote of the subsistence plots that black captives kept on the edges of the plantation, she noted how they were also places of burial: the squash, yam, and other harvested crops would be gifted as offerings to those who, recently buried, were making the \u201cluminous transition\u201d into the ancestral realm. As spaces of gathering, these gardens could alchemise mourning into militance and incite grief into rebellion.<sup data-fn=\"5a043ae0-efe9-4c32-bf7c-8cd570658a52\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5a043ae0-efe9-4c32-bf7c-8cd570658a52\" id=\"5a043ae0-efe9-4c32-bf7c-8cd570658a52-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> That they harboured seeds of radicalism was one of the primary reasons the plantocracy surveilled and tried\u2014never completely succeeding\u2014to regulate them with a desperate paper trail of prohibitions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plantation economy drove monolingualism into the throat of the earth, so that the soil could say only one thing: <em>sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar<\/em>, <em>cotton cotton cotton cotton cotton<\/em>, <em>indigo indigo indigo indigo indigo<\/em>. Drawing from the embodied memories of alternative practices of subsistence, enslaved people cultivated gardens that were polyrhythmically polycropped. They did not sow for profit, but for collective nourishment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These provision grounds were often left unsupervised. Beyond offering food for the belly and a provisional reprieve from the routine brutality of the master, they acted as a portal to another cosmology. Gardening was a practice of remembering how to live otherwise than the laws of capitalist white supremacy dictated. The plots were places for plotting a way to a different world, in the midst of the impossibilities of this one. For these reasons, Wynter calls them sites of \u201ccultural guerilla resistance.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"956fecd1-afef-4101-960f-c84bb637fedd\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#956fecd1-afef-4101-960f-c84bb637fedd\" id=\"956fecd1-afef-4101-960f-c84bb637fedd-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This syllabus is designed to amplify Wynter\u2019s insight, and to open the ears wide to the frequencies of possibility that take root in non-normative acts of gardening. Imagine a stalk with two leaves, each with its own direction of reach: one that invites reflection on the way imperial projects have leveraged botanical knowledge for the purposes of indigenous dispossession and global extraction; and another that gathers dispersed practices of gardening which refuse colonial modernity\u2019s exhaustion of land and labour, along with its humourless fetishisation of heteronormative reproduction as the holy grail of social value.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The readings, soundings, video works, and experiments in sociality that are featured in this syllabus come together in conjuring a provisional ground for minoritised horticultures. These resources guide attention towards how these planting practices seed refusals of the sexual, ecological, political, and epistemological norms through which European colonial modernity reproduces itself as an eternal catastrophe. Part of the invitation here is to study the possibility that subsistence grounds contribute to the material basis of what Wynter elsewhere refers to as a \u201cdemonic ground\u201d\u2014or the inhabitation of meaning which does not submit to the hegemonic \u201cregime of truth\u201d that presently governs global reality.<sup data-fn=\"8a61d32c-83f6-4baa-baba-cfa09c789d55\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8a61d32c-83f6-4baa-baba-cfa09c789d55\" id=\"8a61d32c-83f6-4baa-baba-cfa09c789d55-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a kind of initiation into these peripheral grounds, you can cruise this patch of questions:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-p-1\">Recalling that <em>diaspora<\/em> is rooted etymologically in words that evoke the <em>scatter <\/em>of <em>spore<\/em>, how have gardens offered resources for collective memory in the wake of the tremendous displacements induced by (neo)colonial accumulation? And what have they offered by way of therapeutic and medicinal relief?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are repertoires not only of root-work but of root-play?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-p-2\"><strong>What visions are given by the spark between the steadfastness of indigenous plant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-p-2\"><strong>knowledges and the various arts of refusing to submit to occupation? What are the primary strategies that settlers have deployed in waging their centuries-long war against black and brown subsistence?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-p-3\">How do gardens act as both an expression and site of queer desire, and in doing so, potentially derange traditional delineations of public and private spheres? What gestures of gardening enact the forms of queer dependency that constitute one of the roots of crip wealth? And which gardens have offered themselves as allies in holding opacity for forbidden contact?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-p-4\">What undictated possibilities of eros and knowledge have emerged from frequenting garden grounds?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can one think of gardening as a kind of <em>poiesis<\/em> that isn\u2019t held hostage to conventional framings of the capacity for literacy? What of its rituals activate the <em>radical<\/em> (a word that derives from \u201croot\u201d)?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-p-5\">How has gardening become, at times, an exercise of liberation\u2014even if only seasonal, partial, or precarious?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the strange and stranger fruits of a garden that does not conform?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Groundings<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with the alphabet and some story. At the entryway of the syllabus, painter Kara Walker and novelist Jamaica Kincaid greet you. Recently, they collaborated on the making of <em>An Encyclopedia of Gardening for Colored Children <\/em>(2024). The slender, green book proceeds through each letter of the alphabet, elaborating a word related to the garden\u2014with Walker on the illustrations and Kincaid on the word. \u201cB is for Breadfruit. . . . S is for Solanaceae. Extend your hands to receive a fortune that flutters down from her tree-tall automaton\u2019s mouth. As the Nishnaabeg musician and artist Leanne Betasamosake<br>Simpson says in \u201cLand as Pedagogy,\u201d \u201cIf you want to learn about something, you need to<br>take your body onto the land and do it. Get a practice.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"fbec7393-140a-43bb-862c-cf09ee6bf894\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#fbec7393-140a-43bb-862c-cf09ee6bf894\" id=\"fbec7393-140a-43bb-862c-cf09ee6bf894-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> As you move through the<br>materials in this syllabus, you may want to plant some actual seeds\u2014even if only at the<br>modest scale of a single pot. Tending things into growth out of a tiny capsule of life has a<br>lot to teach, particularly about how tenuous the threshold with non-life can be.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To encounter seeds is to make contact with an intergenerational transmission. Sourcing<br>them thoughtfully can provide a way to start thinking about what strains of the past you\u2019d<br>like to cultivate in the present, and what ancestral keepings you\u2019d like to be in material<br>conversation with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some leads about where to find them:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vivien Sansour, the keeper of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbancura.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palestinian Heirloom Seed Library<\/a>, imagines the seed as a \u201csubversive rebel,\u201d and also as an inheritance given by \u201cour<a href=\"https:\/\/disarmingdesign.com\/product\/heirloom-seeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>ancestors throughout thousands of years of research and imagination.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/disarmingdesign.com\/product\/heirloom-seeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disarming Design <\/a>stocks bamyeh (okra), molokhia (which for Filipinx folks might be more familiar as saluyyot), yakteen (gourd), sabanikh (spinach), and other crops. Sansour\u2019s seeds have travelled across the Atlantic to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hudsonvalleyseed.com\/products\/yakteen-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hudson Valley Seed Company<\/a>, which stocks yakteen.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/trueloveseeds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Truelove Seeds<\/a> has an African diaspora collection, which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/trueloveseeds.com\/products\/aunt-lou-s-underground-railroad-tomato?_pos=1&amp;_sid=9a65e9c9a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aunt Lou\u2019s Underground Railroad Tomato<\/a>, a variety that was carried by a black man from Kentucky to Ripley, Ohio, where there was a safe house on the underground railroad.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sistahseeds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sistah Seeds<\/a>, based in Pennsylvania in the US, has a curated catalogue with the intention of \u201cregenerating\u201d seed-keeping traditions of the African diaspora.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.allianceofnativeseedkeepers.com\/collections\/all-heirloom-seeds\/products\/glass-gem-corn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glass Gem Corn<\/a> is a stunning crop offered by the Alliance of Native Seedkeepers; they also have a sanctuary that collects ancestral seeds which are not for sale and are reserved for their communities of origin. Purchases from their catalogue support native farmers on Turtle Island.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondgenerationseeds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Second Generation Seeds<\/a> carries Asian heirlooms and also offers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondgenerationseeds.com\/shop\/p\/radish-coloring-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">radish<\/a>) colouring books and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondgenerationseeds.com\/guides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grower\u2019s guides <\/a>that put people in touch with the histories of perilla, chrysanthemum, and soybean.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This list skews toward Turtle Island; if you live elsewhere, you can search for local seed-keeping projects closer to home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you\u2019re plotting what to grow, you can tap inspiration by reading about the folk gardeners who keep difference alive. In <a href=\"https:\/\/uapress.arizona.edu\/book\/heirloom-seeds-and-their-keepers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Heirloom Seeds and Their Keepers: Marginality and Memory in the Conservation of Biological Diversit<\/em><\/a><em>y<\/em>, Filipina anthropologist Virginia D. Nazarea follows seedsavers and their practices of staving off the forgetting that is induced by colonial monoculture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive2.bakonline.org\/prospections\/micro-resistances-an-interview-with-samanta-arango-orozco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with artist Marwa Asanios<\/a>, Samanta Arango Orozco speaks about her work with Grupo Semillas, which supports indigenous and peasant communities in Colombia who are struggling to protect their seeds. She foregrounds the role of women as seed guardians and emphasises how, contrary to the museal logic of the seed bank, they insist that seeds are better off \u201cwalking\u201d\u2014that is, out and about, in the ground and among the people, rather than sealed up and stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>plotting across the black diaspora&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/monoskop.org\/images\/1\/13\/Wynter_Sylvia_1971_Novel_and_History_Plot_and_Plantation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this 1971 essay<\/a>, \u201cNovel and History, Plot and Plantation,\u201d Wynter rereads history in terms of the dualism between the settler plantation and the provision grounds kept by enslaved people: a short, but dense set of reflections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gardens make only a small cameo in political theorist Cedric Robinson\u2019s <em>Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition <\/em>(1983)<em>. <\/em>But his larger insight about how \u201cAfrican labor brought the past with it\u201d is worth encountering for anyone interested in problems related to memory, diaspora, and what it is to porter a \u201cprevious universe\u201d into a new world.<sup data-fn=\"a733355f-7c54-471f-af76-388bd5ebf933\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a733355f-7c54-471f-af76-388bd5ebf933\" id=\"a733355f-7c54-471f-af76-388bd5ebf933-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> These reflections on what has been carried through displacement unfold in the chapter titled \u201cThe Historical Archaeology of the Black Radical Tradition.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The geographer Judith Carney records a <a href=\"https:\/\/geog.ucla.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/users\/carney\/33.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moving story<\/a>\u2014told among maroons\u2014about a mother who, seeing that her daughter will be sold away, passes grains of rice onto her, embedding them within the braids of her hair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first two theoretical texts pair nicely with this <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.ecu.edu\/58575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oral history from Emma Dupree<\/a>, a virtuosic black herbalist who kept a \u201cgarden-grown pharmacy\u201d in North Carolina. At 10:53, she takes the interviewer on a tour through her garden, talking about the medicinal uses of various plants and other personal stories related to her experiences of them. It&#8217;s a balm for anyone with a soft spot for grandma energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/insearchofourmot0000walk\/page\/232\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIn Search of Our Mother\u2019s Gardens\u201d<\/a> is a short but deep meditation by novelist Alice Walker about the complex inheritance of black matrilineal lines of creative power. She sees it manifesting in the garden as an artistic practice\u2014undertaken by black women who were \u201cmoving to music not yet written.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/9780816640966\/sowing-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Romare Bearden\u2019s serial garden paintings in homage<\/a> to \u201cpeople who can grow things.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southerncultures.org\/article\/in-search-of-maudell-sleets-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This article<\/a> investigates the woman who likely inspired these paintings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Romare Bearden<\/strong>, <em>Maudell Sleet\u2019s July Garden<\/em>, 1985. Collage of various papers with paint, ink, graphite, surface abrasion, and bleached areas on fiberboard.<sup data-fn=\"fe6c10f0-3ab9-4f8c-858c-2fc42789466c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#fe6c10f0-3ab9-4f8c-858c-2fc42789466c\" id=\"fe6c10f0-3ab9-4f8c-858c-2fc42789466c-link\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>imperial phantasies<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The next two offerings in the syllabus are companions. In Kincaid\u2019s essay \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doubleoperative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/kincaid-in-history.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In History<\/a>,\u201d her garden instigates a cascade of realisations about colonialism and conquest-by-naming. Though it\u2019s a little sideways, I like to teach this with \u201cShe Unnames Them,\u201d a short parable by the visionary of speculative fiction Ursula K. Le Guin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Botanical gardens are typically regarded as places of leisure. It\u2019s a bit of a mind-fuck to realise how thoroughly they have shaped world history. You can get a glimpse of their role in projects of European domination in the anthropologist Lucile Brockway\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/sciencecoloniale0000broc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Science and Colonial Expansion<\/em><em> <\/em>(1979).<\/a> The chapter on cinchona is particularly interesting, as it was instrumental in suppressing the Sepoy rebellion against British colonial forces in 1857.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curator Sadiah Boonstra\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarhub.ui.ac.id\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1111&amp;context=wacana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cOn the Nature of Botanical Gardens: Decolonial Aesthesis in Indonesian Contemporary Art\u201d<\/a> lays out some of the ways that horticultural accumulation was indispensable to the consolidation of empire. She focuses on Dutch extractivism in Indonesia. Her essay also provides an introduction to several Indonesian artists who are working to decolonise the senses. Among the works she speaks about are a short film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteboardjournal.com\/interview\/ideas\/examining-life-through-films-with-edwin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Hortus<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2014), which juxtaposes scenes of botany and pornography. Some of this film was shot in Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laguna Pueblo storyteller Leslie Marmon Silko has written a novel that follows two native sisters named Indigo and Sister Salt, as well as a grandmother who knows only one word in English: <em>No. <\/em>The narration in<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/gardensindunes00silk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Garden of the Dunes<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(1999) follows Indigo as she\u2019s sent to a residential boarding school and later visits gardens in Europe, seeing both horticultural traditions through a comparative gaze.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/valiz.nl\/en\/publications\/on-the-necessity-of-gardening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>On the Necessity of Gardening: An ABC of Art, Botany and Cultivation<\/em><\/a> (2021), edited by Laurie Cluitmans, includes an essay by curator and writer Alhena Kastof, which walks through some of Wynter\u2019s ideas about \u201cautochthony,\u201d and also recalls how the authoritarian thugs of the Nazi regime went around tearing up \u201cnon-native\u201d species from the \u201cGerman\u201d soil. They even uprooted Polish forests and replanted them with German flora. This history is a reminder of how fascism gets off on colonial fantasies of purity that traverse the human-flora divide. Amid this fascist milieu, the German artist Hannah Hoch stashed the \u201cdegenerate art\u201d that her friends had made deep in the soil of her garden, a story of resistance that is refreshed for the present in an illustrated book called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hatjecantz.com\/products\/58166-interior-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Interior Garden<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2024), which is edited by art historian Leah Pires.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/1mpZYofxh3llGhAvvanFnh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Every Gesture Counts, However Small<\/a>\u201d is an episode of the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/promise-no-promises\/id1451208864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Promises, No Promises <\/em><\/a>that revives the intimacy of the epistolary tradition. In this exchange between curator Sonia Fern\u00e1ndez Pan and visual artist Karolina Grzywnowicz, their conversation drifts thoughtfully as they speak about the \u201cpoetry of vernacular plant names\u201d; the links between racial and botanical classification; and the many unsettling ways that European state forces have deployed plant cultivation a means of camouflaging violence.<sup data-fn=\"19f969a6-bfcf-4a31-9396-a4903c737d48\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#19f969a6-bfcf-4a31-9396-a4903c737d48\" id=\"19f969a6-bfcf-4a31-9396-a4903c737d48-link\">7<\/a><\/sup> Grzywnowicz recalls how Nazis grew a green belt around their death camps, encouraged the growth of lupine to cover mass graves, and how the commandant of Auschwitz designed his personal garden to obscure his views of the concentration camps. She proceeds to talk about the ways that Zionists have instrumentalised agriculture in the service of Palestinian erasure\u2014not least by planting European pines over depopulated Arab villages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>An (imaginary) inventory of * (palimpsest) plants, gardens, and other related objects*<\/em> (2021)<em> <\/em>is a small edition risograph booklet that acts as an interactive guide through the remnants of French colonialism in the city of New Orleans. If you\u2019re in Europe, you can buy it from a beloved little bookstore of mine in Berlin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hopscotchreadingroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hopscotch Reading Room<em>.<\/em><\/a> Otherwise, it can be found online at <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginaryinventory.persona.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Constance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>scatter and dia-spora<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my favourite projects of documenta fifteen was artist Tu\u00e2n Mami and Nh\u00e0 S\u00e0n Collective\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/documenta-fifteen.de\/en\/mediathek\/tuan-mami-nha-san-collective-vietnamese-immigrating-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Vietnamese Immigrating Garden<\/em><\/a> (2022). They turned their patch of Kassel into a communal space\u2014setting up informal housing for queers who wanted to visit the festival but didn\u2019t necessarily have the funds that could satisfy global north hotel prices. They also worked with the local Viet community to gather a library of seeds and plant a garden together. It was lush, warm, and felt like a green oasis in the midst of a broader cultural landscape that brutally rewards individualism. Newly arrived refugees to Germany also found the space to be inviting and remarked on the therapeutic effect of working in the garden alongside Viet immigrants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in Hanoi, Mami has since dedicated another garden installation to the Viet workers who have immigrated to Taiwan\u2014as refugees from the war of 1979, as brides, imported labour, or as students. Though it\u2019s technically illegal to import seeds, some do so clandestinely, and grow gardens that allow them to feel closer to home while abroad. This<a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/851965\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em> <\/em>iteration of the <em>Immigrating Garden<\/em><\/a> is in homage to Mrs. Dung, who immigrated as a factory worker and, over the years, smuggled enough seeds to start a garden that supports her traditional medicinal practices. <a href=\"https:\/\/artsoftheworkingclass.org\/edition\/arts-of-the-working-class-31-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This interview<\/a> with Mami was first published in the \u201cForeigners Everywhere\u201d issue of <em>Arts of the Working Class<\/em>, the Berlin street-paper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental historian Jessica Lee has written a refreshingly readable book about plants, migration, and belonging. It\u2019s called <a href=\"https:\/\/books.catapult.co\/books\/dispersals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dispersals<\/em><\/a>: <em>On Plants, Borders, and Belonging<\/em><em> <\/em>(2025)<em>. <\/em>Alongside reflections about the racially laden terminology of \u201cinvasive\u201d species, she also writes about the brassicas that are indispensable to many Asian cuisines, and recalls her experience growing them in communal gardens. She offers one of the rare occasions in food writing in which someone marks a preference for bitter greens over desserts.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a short reflection on \u201c<a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/M\/Downloads\/In%20a%20short%20reflection%20on%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Touching the Earth<\/a>,\u201d author, theorist, and educator bell hooks writes of the Great Migration and the ways it induced a lasting estrangement between black people and the land. Overcoming her feeling that she could not garden, she grows some collards and senses how making a meal from what one grows provides a form of ancestral connection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by author Octavia E. Butler\u2019s <em>Earthseed<\/em> series, futurist Lily Consuelo Saporta Tagiuri reflects has designed <a href=\"https:\/\/thisismold.com\/series\/earthseed\/in-case-of-emergency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seed libraries that can be worn on the body<em>.<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>healing<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/milkweed.org\/book\/aster-of-ceremonies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Aster of Ceremonies: Poems<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2023)<em> <\/em>teaches of that threshold where \u201cmaster,\u201d by the slightest metamorphosis, becomes <em>aster<\/em>, a flowering plant. Artist, musician, writer, gardener, and proud stutterer JJJJJerome Ellis gives gorgeous poetry to the flora that runaway slaves would likely have encountered while in flight. The lyrics are steeped in archival material\u2014particularly the advertisements that, like \u201cwanted\u201d posters, gave public notice of captives who had fled and could be identified by their stammer. <em>Aster of Ceremonies<\/em> is incantatory\u2014elegiac and honorific botanical music that nourishes collective tropism towards the dead. Listen to dysfluency become chorus. <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/milkweed-editions\/sets\/aster-of-ceremonies-by\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In the audiobook<\/a>, Ellis performs the music that is transcribed and canted on the page. She can also be spotted in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W0gUBz1W57A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a>, playing the saxophone to the plants that are growing along the High Line in New York City.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Yogyakarta collective Lifepatch has devoted this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Km9JqjmzGqw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">videowork<\/a> to Batak healing practices and medicinal plant-knowledges that Dutch colonists targeted for elimination.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the capacious moments of poet <a href=\"https:\/\/emergencemagazine.org\/essay\/when-the-prince-of-heaven-sleeps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roger Reeves\u2019s essay about black men at rest<\/a>, he reflects beautifully on a lesser-known side of the rapper DMX, who once appeared on the TV show <em>Fresh Off the Boat<\/em>, in the space of a greenhouse, where he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gqoaL9SrR3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gently lavishes his attention on orchids<\/a>. He has names for each of the plants (Beatrice, Denise) and elaborates his erotics of care: \u201cYou don\u2019t need to give your girl a gift; you need to give her your time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a complement to calls for land repatriation, native people have been advocating for seed rematriation. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nativefoodalliance.org\/indigenous-seedkeepers-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indigenous Seedkeepers Network<\/a> has been working to release seeds from seed vaults and return them to tribal communities that have an ancestral connection to them. You can read about one of these <a href=\"https:\/\/nativefoodalliance.wordpress.com\/indigenous-seedkeepers-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">family reunions<\/a> that took place in Taos, New Mexico. Mohawk seed guardian Rowen White, who has said that bringing seeds home has been one of the most healing dimensions of her activism, offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/sierraseeds.org\/seed-seva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">holistic, online course<\/a> on seed stewardship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s being restored is not just seeds but kin and the practices of planting that, unlike monocropping, don\u2019t normalise ravaging the earth. In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/braiding-sweetgrass-indigenous-wisdom-scientific-knowledge-and-the-teachings-of-plants_202212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Braiding Sweetgrass<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2013)<em>, <\/em>scientist<em> <\/em>Robin Wall Kimmerer recounts the significance of the three sisters way of planting\u2014a method of growing squash, beans, and corn in proximity, so that they all offer some support to one another. If you haven\u2019t already read it, \u201cThe Grammar of Animacy\u201d is a memorable chapter\u2014and one that students love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>agri-cultures of refusal<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I like Jumana Manna\u2019s film <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IYsHPUkp6JU?si=v0tG_OG5YQL7Pseh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Foragers<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2022) so much that I feel compelled to include it, even though it moves beyond the <em>topos<\/em> of the garden into that of the forager. The film follows Palestinians who defy the Israeli ban on foraging <em>za\u2019atar <\/em>and <em>akkoub <\/em>(wild greens that are nutritionally dense and have thorns that soften if you know how to handle them).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooklyn-based independent publisher Wendy\u2019s Subway recently released an illustrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendyssubway.com\/publishing\/titles\/abu-jildeh-and-al-armeet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book that remembers the story of Abu Jildeh<\/a>, a band of Palestinian farmers in the Nablus area who staged an insurgency against the British occupation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/monicamariewhite.com\/freedom-farmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom<\/em><\/a><em> Movement<\/em><em> <\/em>(2018)<em>,<\/em><em> <\/em>Monica White, professor of environmental justice, assembles an archive of projects that sought to establish self-determining food systems for black communities. Among these include activist Fannie Lou Hamer\u2019s freedom farm and garden, which she started after federal policies attempted to sever black agriculturalists from their land.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art historian and photographer Jill Casid considers the cultural significance of the gardens that enslaved people kept, with special attention to their relation to the visual genre of the picturesque and to colonial ideas of hybridity. A good part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/9780816640966\/sowing-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sowing Empire<\/em><\/a> (2004) attends to the role of botanical life in the Haitian revolution. There\u2019s some particularly good lore in there about poison and setting colonial infrastructure on fire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>earthly transitions<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An artist who thinks about how to transition out of cultural attachments to the \u201chuman,\u201d Precious Okoyomon works with the invasive plants that many ecologists abhor. Their practice is devoted to the \u201cblackness of the earth.\u201d You can listen to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PlPE0BgL790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Reading to Plants<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2020), which they performed in one of their verdant installations that mess with the typical sterility of the gallery space. You can also read about the garden they cultivated in the Nigerian Pavilion for the Venice Biennale, which they describe as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/artofchange21.com\/en\/in-conversation-with-precious-okoyomon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">love letter to Lagos<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anothermother.co\/database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Another Mother<\/a> is a database that gathers information about plants\u2014as well as fungi and other creatures\u2014who live out multiple sexes, contrary to the silly proposition that it is \u201cnatural\u201d to inhabit one biologically determined gender forever and ever (a credo of contemporary anti-trans legislation).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsqnow.online\/post\/queer-gardening-film-stills-and-quotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corner of<\/a> <em>Transgender Studies Quarterly Now<\/em>, you can read about the collective farm called Urban Campesinx, which hosts two-spirit ceremonies and cultivates Cempas\u00fachil (marigold) as a way to honour queers who have died while in detention.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a zine called <em>T<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.qzap.org\/index.php\/Detail\/Object\/Show\/object_id\/54\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>he Transgender Herb Garden: An MtF guide to disconnecting one\u2019s self from big pharma<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a piece called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/necrocenenecrolandscaping.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/12_casid.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Necrolandscaping<\/a>,\u201d Casid writes about the Transgender Memorial Garden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Run by trans and two-spirit folks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mariposasrebeldes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mariposas Rebeldes<\/a> started a communal garden in Atlanta to address food scarcity and apartheid. One of the cofounders, Wvto Trist\u00e1n, is restoring connections to crops and companion planting methods that were significant to their N\u00e1huatl ancestors. They <a href=\"mailto:Mariposas%20Rebeldes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborate with the Trans Housing Coalition<\/a> and create spaces where trans POCs can find nourishment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>pleasure gardens<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Burn something that smells good and treat yourself to a listening session of pianist and polyrhythmic poet Cecil Taylor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ubu.com\/sound\/taylor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Chinampas<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(1987), which is inspired by the pre-Columbian \u201cfloating gardens\u201d of the Valley of Mexico. You can read a little about this agricultural craft in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/24931564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Scientific American<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>article. Fans of Taylor can go on and read Fred Moten\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubu.com\/papers\/moten.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lyrical tribute<\/a> to him\u2014and all that is \u201ctransmitted on frequencies outside and beneath the range of reading.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"8df479f7-f4b2-453f-82d8-0b61d8eb907a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8df479f7-f4b2-453f-82d8-0b61d8eb907a\" id=\"8df479f7-f4b2-453f-82d8-0b61d8eb907a-link\">8<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might then spend some time cruising all the compelling details within the series of mural-scale paintings that artist Kerry James Marshall refers to as his <em>Garden Project<\/em>. There are the dripping clouds, the layer of cellophane through which the stuffed rabbit sees the world, and the bluebirds beaking old-school ribbons of text across the sky. Playing with the double meaning of \u201cprojects,\u201d he dedicated these epic canvases to black working-class neighbourhoods in Chicago and Los Angeles, including the one in Watts, where he grew up. Some of these tracks include recordings from the 1998 occupation of Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Ultra-red and the Gay and Lesbian Action Alliance collaborated in reclaiming the park, which was a spot where mostly black and Latinx queers pursued their pleasure in public. A homeowners association wanted to \u201crid Griffith Park of the gays.\u201d The Los Angeles Police department did their bidding and subsequently raided the beat.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It works to read that alongside cultural theorists Lauren Berlant and Michael Warner\u2019s essay on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/queerspain\/files\/2020\/03\/Berlant-and-Warner-Sex-in-Public.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sex in Public<\/a>.\u201d That piece couples well with queer writer Amalle Dublon\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/glq\/article-abstract\/24\/4\/509\/135976\/Second-Nature-2nd-NatureOn-Ultra-red-TLC-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> reflections on Ultra-Red and states of dependency<\/a>, which will also bring you to hear the R&amp;B group TLC in ways you never have before.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the arguments that Berlant and Warner make in an academic register are voiced in this interview with pop star <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wVJPY3dpA38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Michael<\/a>, during which\u2014palpably fed up with the homophobia of mainstream media\u2014he talks about cruising at London\u2019s Hampstead Heath. The painting has a different colour palette but nevertheless hosts palpable echoes of Hieronymous Bosch\u2019s triptych, <em>The<\/em> <em>Garden of Earthly Delights <\/em>(1503\u20131515)<em>. <\/em>It was shown at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, as part of the exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernamuseet.se\/stockholm\/en\/exhibitions\/rashid-johnson-seven-rooms-and-a-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Seven Rooms and a Garden<\/em><\/a>, which ran in 2023 and 2024. Oil on linen, 170.2 x 307.3 cm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the final years of his life, the filmmaker Derek Jarman cultivated an idiosyncratic garden as he was getting worn down by AIDS. The spot where he worked and ornamented the land with his elegantly scrappy sculptures was near a nuclear power station. If you\u2019re ever nearby, you can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenvisit.com\/gardens\/derek_jarman_garden_prospect_cottage_dungeness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prospect Cottage<\/a> in Dungeness, at the bottom of the UK. Otherwise, you can read <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/modernnature00jarm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his journals<\/a>, in which reflections on gardening and dying grow through each other. His friend Howard Sooley took a series of photographs of Prospect Cottage across the seasons, which are gathered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/derek-jarman\/derek-jarman%E2%80%99s-garden\/9781643265353\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Derek Jarman\u2019s Garden<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(1995).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:57px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>continuing education<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A hub for black, indigenous, queer, and trans herbalism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbancura.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herban Cura<\/a> hosts a living library with many wonderful knowledge-shares that connect people to ancestral, ecological wisdom and ways of living in solidarity with more-than-human kin.
